10:31 pm
win this ballgame. >> you throw everything at them but the kitchen sink and that's what dave trembley did. he at least tied this ballgame and gave the club a chance to win. all of the players ready to do a good job. all of the pitchers are anxious to get their pinch hit. guthrie was the only one with hill. if the orioles hadn't made that one base-running mistake, they had a chance of winning this ballgame on that fly ball to left field, possibly scoring a run with a sacrafice fly. >> and koji uehara pitched a pretty good game until he was taken out there. >> he did. he has been struggling to get deep in ballgames. you can see him laboring through the hot water. -- weather. he is just not used that youd to that now. a pretty good job on the part of koji to get the ball club deep in that game. >> again, the orioles lose to the florida marlins 7-6 in the first of three in florida. and let's go back down to south florida to jim hunter and buck

martinez. >> thank you very much. really an exciting game, especially when the orioles fell he behind 6-1. chris ray returned to the emand he immediately got into a very close game and gave the orioles an opportunity to get back in it. >> and dave trembley did a nice job of bringing him into kind of a non-pressurized situation when he came into the ballgame because the club was down. but chris ray atoteally different caliber of pitches when we saw him tonight than when he last pitched for the orioles. he was down in the zone. very effective throughout his inning and 2/3 and he allowed just one base runner. the one thing i really liked was the location of his fastball and the fact that he got the breaking ball down in the zone. he had one strikeout through just 18 pitches in an inning and 2/3. obviously the assignment to the minor leagues really paid big dividends for chris ray. he really straightened himself out. it is good to see him throwing well again. >> it was really an indifferent night for the orioles' bullpen because danys baez had a tough
10:33 pm
night. he only got one out and allowed five runs. after ray, jim johnson came on and had two scoreless innings and the guys in the back end of that bullpen, johnson in flair, he has been very dependable all year. >> he sure has, jim. and i think one thing is the comradey and they pick up one another that's what they did tonight for danys baez. baez has been so good, and he had a couple tough spots the last couple of times up. he gave up the three-run home run to ryan howard on saturday night and give autopsy grand slam, but his relieving pals in the bullpen picked him up and kept it a scoreless game into the bottom of the 12th inning. >> when brian bass walked the lead-off man in particular afast runner, bonifacio, you're asking for trouble. all you have to do is get the run and the game end ins the bottom of the inning. and luke scott made a strong throw to the plate and gregg zaun did the only thick a catcher can do in that situation, hope you come up with it and tag the base runner all in one motion. unfortunately he couldn't get the ball in there.
10:34 pm
luke plaid a strong throw, but the lead-off walk and the wild pitch proved costly. >> the orioles battle back and this team has been resilient on the year. you better get the 27 outs. we're going to welcome in the manager dave trembley. a disappointing loss, but what a battle your team made. you have to be really proud of the effort. two outs and nobody on in the ninth inning and somehow they manage to score three runs and tie it. >> we got some big hits off the bench. we got obviously some big two- out hits and, like you said, we played all 27 outs for the first inning innings there and had a chance and extra innings it didn't lap for us. but we played hard and we gave ourselves a chance. that's all you can ask for. [ dave, you're seeing some young guys grow here in front of your eyes, matt wieters with a couple of big swings. how about oscar salazar, this guy seems to hit no matter what the situation is. >> he has an idea of how to use the whole field and he has
10:35 pm
confidence. the other guys have confidence when they go up there. i think that is a real big thing on both sides. he has really made some big contributions for us. >> i know how quickly things come at you as a manager. you used the entire play book tonight using jeremy guthrie and doing whatever you could, even rich hill. he had a pretty decent at-bat. unfortunately ty wigginton misread the play and that was a big out. >> yeah, it was. and obviously it didn't come at the right time. we wish we could do it over again. we can't. you have to move on. >> dave, after one hit through seven innings when andrew miller left, the bats seemed to really come back and that is something to look forward to tomorrow as the orioles got back in this game and able to tie it against the closer. even though you came up a run short, it was a pretty good battle all the way. >> you know, we worked the count better. he was real tough in the game, miller pitched very, very well. it was a different game once we got into their bullpen.
10:36 pm
>> dei, we appreciate the visit. >> why you're welcome. >> dave really managed a great game tonight because he used everybody on the bench a pitcher to pinch run, a pitcher to pinch hit. he did everything he could to try to get his team a win and they simply came up a run short. >> and you're down we three runs, you say, okay, what can i do now? you keep sending the pinch hitters and you keep thinking, out of the box jeremy guthrie scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning and sending rich hill up there was good. in philadelphia on friday night he had a base hit and an rbi and he almost picked up another one here tonight. >> two outs and nobody out and in the top of the ninth and you're down by three with the other team's closer on the mound, you don't think there is any shot you have a chance. the orioles battle back and tie it and come up short and lose in extras. >> our thanks to jim and buck. the orioles are you 3-2 in extra inning ball games so far for this season. time to take a look at the at&t player of the game and it turns
